This three-CD set highlights the multi-layered personality of the master country songwriter Merle Haggard, from the Tejano/Bakersfield sound of "Friend in California" to the deep country blues of "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive." You get funny, poignant drinking songs (Haggard is the only songwriter around who'd dare to rhyme "take the money in the bank" with "I'll stay here and drink"), and cautionary semi-autobiographical tunes--the delicate, guitar-laced "Mama Tried" is as pretty as country gets. "Going Where the Lonely Go" demonstrates Haggard's skill at writing the kind of desolate, beautiful ballads that typify the best country music, while "C.C. Waterback," his raunchy duet with George Jones, is wittily followed by the regretful "Why Am I Drinkin'." Haggard's Western swing roots are apparent in "This Song Is For You," and the prison ballad "Sing Me Back Home" carries both the authenticity of real experience and the grace of a country classic.
